I studied painting & drawing at Liverpool College of Art and subsequently qualified as a teacher. I also have a degree in Philosophy and History of Art from the Open University. My grandmothers taught me to knit and make rag rugs, activities which still inform all my work.  I have taken part in Dumfries & Galloway’s Studio Trail ‘Spring Fling’ since its inception. My work has been shown in galleries in England, Ireland and Scotland

Ideas are initially contained in ‘journey books’ – watercolour studies, photographs and text. Observation combines with memory and imagination, shaped and influenced by poetry, history, philosophy. From first beginnings new series of work take shape. Finished work is completed slowly - oils on canvas or board, wool on needles, collages/montages.

After living in Scotland for twenty years, I returned to Cumbria in March 2017.

Recent work includes the series:

  • ‘catchment’ shown at Gracefield Arts Centre, Dumfries in 2013/14
  • ‘habitat’ shown at Perth Museum & Art Gallery 2015
  • ‘frost & fire’ shown at Gracefield Arts Centre in 2015/16
  • ‘winter’ shown at the Whitehouse Gallery, Kirkcudbright 2016/17

Since moving to Shap, I have begun a project to visit the sheepfolds which sculptor Andy Goldsworthy reconstructed in Cumbria. I have also been discovering the fells and Lowther Valley to the west. The overlap and merging of other disciplines - walking, drawing, painting, photography and writing is significant in the development of new art work. I organise my research into 'journey books' for each new project. The outcomes vary - from series of paintings to a set of fair isle knitted cushions and collages. A visit to Woolfest in June was a revelation - it's all about sheep and wool in this area! 'Fold in the Land' includes studies and photographs which will form the basis of a new series of textile works - see these in the Textile section of the website.
